Rebit backup software provides support to the data backup needs of those customers subject to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, as amended, as Covered Entities or Business Associates. This page will assist you in using the Rebit for HIPAA in a compliant manner when backing up data that may contain Protected Health Information (PHI).
This article applies to Rebit Partners and Rebit Business Customers.
Prerequisites for utilizing Rebit with PHI and HIPAA
- Please read the Rebit Backup HIPAA Compliance page for important information prior to enabling customers.
- You must have either a Partner Account or Business Account with access to the corresponding admin portal.
Notify Rebit of users who may backup PHI data
For any user that utilizes the Rebit Software in a manner that causes Rebit to create, receive, maintain, or transmit Protected Health Information (as defined in HIPAA) on your behalf, please ensure you notify Rebit of this by within either the Rebit Partner Portal or the Rebit Business Portal.
Enable the PHI flag as follows:
- From the Add User screen, place a check next to the “Might this user store PHI?”
- Once the user is added, confirm there is a “true” in the PHI column.
Similarly, you can edit this value on existing users by clicking the Update or Renew button as appropriate.
Ensure the Rebit software is up-to-date
Important changes to Rebit are provided and maintained to help ensure proper security. Please regularly keep your users on the latest version of Rebit.
To meet guidelines, users must be on version 6.1.3001.14966 or newer (released August of 2018).
From the Rebit software:
- Click Settings
- Click Software Updates
From there, Rebit will automatically check for updates and prompt to install if available.
